Literature Text

Yellow and orange are these giants of light,
the days under their sky are sure to be bright.

Sunset and sunrise - spectacles to behold!
This twin-sunned experience will never get old.

Another sibling faintly glows red in the distance;
yet hardly anyone takes note of its existence.

While yellow and orange are burning themselves brightly,
the red one bides its time and changes ever so slightly.

When in trillions of years, after all is said and done,
the red one will still glow, the others are long since gone.
Today's NaPoWriMo prompt was: "Write a poem that incorporates the idea of doubles."

For a theme so simple I hard a really hard time coming up with an idea for a poem. In the end I decided to write a poem consisting of multiple couplets, and chose a binary star system as theme; to be precise, Rigil Kentarus (commonly known as Alpha Centauri) is not just a binary star system, but possibly something of a tertiary star system since a third star, Proxima Centauri, is also - in astronomical terms - relatively 'close' to the other two at 'only' 0.2 light years of distance. Since it is a so-called 'red dwarf' it can burn much more of its own mass before collapsing, so despite its faint glow compared to other main sequence stars it will still be there *trillions* of years after the others have died.

If you like to know more, please do educate yourself about this! Everything astronomy-related is utterly fascinating if you go into the details.

Long story short - this is about the duality of things:
Shining bright and dying fast vs. burning slow, but for a long time
twins vs. only child
life vs. death
spectacle vs. continuity
etc.
