Forgotten History
Evidence of history is all around us, if we open our eyes and take the time to look around. My hometown has quite a number of memorials, some of them only small signs. People pass by them on a daily basis; however, if you ask someone what these are about, most people will answer with a shrug and a questioning look in their eyes.

One particular event that inspired people to raise a number of memorials - so it may never be forgotten - were the early days of April 1813. The event that took place was a battle of the Wars of Liberation, which were a part of the Napoleonic Wars. In case you're interested, you can read about it here: [link]

This particular monument is dedicated to two men that died on April 1, 1813. Please note that the bottom plate covered in snow has the same inscription. Here is a translation:

Here lie the remains of two men of Lüneburg, the townsman Franz Spangenberg, and the resident Christ. Ludwig Wilhelm Gellers. In the service for the fatherland taken captive under arms they were shot dead on this field on April 1, 1813.
Citizens raised this memorial on March 18, 1863.

Even today, two nearby streets are named after Spangenberg and Gellers respectively.
